Addie is our five year old Pitt bull hound mix we adopted about 2 months ago and this is her story . Addie started off being a happy puppy with lots of love and energy . Unfortunately like many animals she was placed in a home that was not a good place. She was neglected , starved and abused . She ran away and lived on the streets . She got in a few fights and has a several scars to prove it. Since no one ever spayed her , she had at least 2 litters of puppies while she was on the streets . Finally it was all to much stress for this little girls body. She got sick and couldn't take care of her puppies like she wanted to . some one saw her laying next to a dumpster with all her puppies and called animal services .. When they arrived they realized her puppies were all dead and she was not doing so great either. They tried to get her to come with them but she didn't want to leave her babies. They eventually were able to get her , they took her to to pound , where they treated her . At this point in her life she was terrified of people and basically everything. Who would expect any different? She had no reason to trust any one and no previous experience that taught her that people could help her . To say she is timid would be putting it nicely . Because she is part Pitt bull they put her on the euthanasia/kill list. They had never seen her be aggressive ,but like so many others, they assumed because she was part Pitt and she was timid she had to be aggressive right? They could not have been more wrong. Luckily the Omaha animal shelter came through to see if they could save any of the dogs off the kill list . Addie stole their heart along with a few others , and they took her to their shelter in hopes of finding a good home for her. Since she was so timid this was a hard task . She stayed in their kennels for a year , and then was moved to a foster home for 6 months . Her foster parents diligently took her to adoption events but people were always scared to take a chance on her because she seemed afraid ..... which she was . But then one sunny day a unsuspecting couple went to pets mart to get dog food for their other two dogs ! They saw her,, and read her sweet story and decided o take her home . And the rest is history ... or so you thought haha .
My name Chelsey and this is our story. After finishing our paper work and waiting about a week, we got to bring Addie home . We knew that we had a BIG job ahead of us trying to get this sweet dog to trust us and to let her self be happy again . Let me put this in perspective. when she arrived her foster parents carried her to our front door because she was too afraid to walk. I had a bed ready for her and they set her down on it . She laid there for 72 hours with out moving . She did not was to eat , or go out side, or go to the restroom . I tried to get her to eat/drink anything I could because I was afraid she would dehydrate . She would eat peanut butter and drink chicken broth but only if My husband and I were out of the room. We carried her out side but she just hid behind the air conditioner box shaking. I wish I could describe the look of udder fear and confusion on her face . It was heart breaking . Weeks past and she slowly improved . She started eating/drinking regularly , she would get out of her bed to walk around !! She learned how to use the doggy door and wasn't terrified of the outside any more . Then one day she wagged her tail for the first time , then she barked and wanted to play with our other dogs !! These are big steps for her . I remember the first time she took a treat from my hand (up till then you had to lay it down and turn around before she would eat it ) I cried (: We tried to take her on walks but she would just lay there as we tried to literally drag her to the park ... We found out she loves car rides so if we put her in the car and drove to the park she could go play . The first 4 ish times she just lay there terrified on the edge of the grass . Then one day she started to run around and chase us as we ran around and called to her .It was the best day .
We took her camping , it was amazing . This shy, timid, terrified little dog ;That usually crawled on her belly , or crouched down , that rarely made noise , and flinched every time u moved, turned into a dog again . She ran through the woods for hours , more like bounding, it was hilarious. she always wanted to be in the front of the "pack" . She came back to camp and she wanted to sit by us around the fire . She slept with us in our tent. and never stopped wagging her tail . When we got home she continued to be super happy . She can go on walk now and she listens so well, She has never shown the slightest action of aggression toward any person or animal . In fact I trust her temper more them my chocolate lab's . She loves to snuggle and she has been a huge blessing to our family . She is proof that every dog deserves a second chance . If my little Addie girl can bounce back from the life she had then any dog can . All it takes is patience, LOTS OF LOVE , making sure they are getting exercise , and a tiny bit of discipline. I hope a few of you will choose to adopt a dog instead of wanting a pure bread puppy , cause nothing could be more rewarding then giving a dog like Addie a second chance at life . !!
